ACCESS
Journey in private car takes 850 Km from on national highway RN7 (Tanà - Toliara) to Ambinanitelo.
Typical mission: Day 1- Tana > Ihosy by car; Day 2- Ihosy > Ambinanitelo by car and walk Ambinanitelo -Andranoheza (this village is the closest to the forest); Day 3 - walk 5-6 hours d'Andranoheza to the forest.
GOAL
Analavelona Forest continues to be managed effectively by local stakeholders: retaining both its cultural and biological importance.
VEGETATION
Island of subhumid/humid forest on basalt in subarid landscape.
BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE
1- Habitat Eulemur rufifrons, Propithecus verreauxi, Lepilemur ruficaudatus, Pteropus rufus
2- Rare occurence of humid forest in dry southwest.
3- Very high local endemism.
SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE
Traditional/cultural value as home of ancestors spirits. Timber used for coffins. Forest consitutes a barrier against wild fires. Source of Fiherena River.
THREATS
1- Wild fire.
2- Selective exploitaton of timber.
