MAKING PROTECTED AREAS PAY : SEEDS FOR EDUCATION

“VALORISING THE ANALAVELONA SACRED FOREST NEW PROTECTED AREA AS A SOURCE OF SEEDS FOR FOREST RESTORATION WHILE SUPPORTING LOCAL EDUCATION”

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Summary

The conservation of Madagascar’s remarkable biodiversity faces numerous challenges, including, importantly, the need for impoverished communities living close to protected area to derive greater benefits from such sites; and the lack of reliable supply chains for high quality seeds of native trees to enable them to contribute to the country’s ambitious reforestation plans. We will work with parent-teacher associations at local schools around Analavelona Forest, Sakaraha to develop lucrative seed supply chains: thereby addressing both these problems simultaneously.

THE SPECIFIC OUTPUTS

• Improved education for children at 3 schools close of Analavelona
• High quality seeds of named and evaluated native tree species available to reforestation projects in SW Madagascar
• Effective, self-sufficient, seed supply business launched with capacity to continue work on a commercial basis post-funding
• The managers of other protected areas in Madagascar can evaluate the project and its relevance at the sites where they work

THE ACTIVITIES

1. Explain project with stakeholders (including representatives of MEDD, DREED, FRAM and Lonaky) and modify according to feedback.
2. Recruit new teachers/local animators x 3, seed collectors/rangers x 12 and nurserywomen x 12.
3. Develop Manual of Procedures with FRAM based on good governance, and provide coaching in its application
4. Research to identify ca. 20 native tree species potentially useful for reforestation (= target species)
5. Train of local seed collectors/rangers and nurserywomen
6. Install and equip 3 nurseries (adjacent to partner schools)
7. Coach local staff in seed collection, seed preparation and storage, dispatch to Business Unit and the propagation of seedlings for trials
8. Install and monitor trials of target tree species and share results of species-specific outcomes on sales’ website
9. Identify and recruit business managers x 2 and administrators x 2 from local graduates, establish and office in Sakaraha and legalise operations (=Business Unit)
10 Support Business Unit to conceive, create and maintain a “sales” webpage, to seek purchasers, and to make funds available to FRAM
11. Share results of project through social media, a website and workshops, and by hosting a site visit by interested parties.
