ACCESS
525 km from Tana (500km from Tana to Soanierana Ivongo and then 25 km de Soanierana Ivongo to Pointe A Larrée - with two ferries). The journey takes 2 days. Forest close to road.
GOAL
Socio-economic conditions exist at Pointe A Larrée that permit sustainable use of natural resources by local stakeholders and thereby the regeneration of degraded habitats.
VEGETATION
Littoral forest, evergreen forest on laterite, swamp, marshes, lakes
BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE
1- Rare fragment of littoraland swamp forests.
2- High botanical diversity.
3- Several threatened and locally endemic plants.
4- Rich avifauna.
5- Six species of lemur.
SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE
Timber exploited commercially and also for personal use. Water birds hunted. Forest used for shifting cultivation. Some mining of semi-precious stones.
THREATS
1- Selective exploitaton of timber.
2- Conflict with private land owner.
3- Wild fires.
4- Hunting.
