ACCESS
Antananarivo-Mahabo (Farafangana): 800 km on national highways (Rn7 + Rn 25 + RN 12a), in a private car two days trip, one stop in Ranomafana, no flight available.
GOAL
The Agnalazaha Forest and its surroundings are managed by local people so as to provide resources sustainably and to retain the full range of its biological diversity.
VEGETATION
Littoral forest on sand, marshes and lakes.
BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE
1- Rare fragment of littoral forest.
2- Locally endemic plants.
3- Critically Endangered lemur = Eulemur cinereiceps.
SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE
Heavily used by local people for timber for construction and fence posts, fuel wood, sedges for weaving, medicines, foods (tubers). Also, part of the forest is a cemetary.
THREATS
1- Selective exploitaton of wood for timber and fence post.
2- Wild fires.
3- Shifting cultivation.
4- Hunting.
