ACCESS

Vohibe forest can be accessible by walk from 2 differents points, one from Beforona (11 hours walk) and one from Vatomandry (17 hours walk). Access to the forest from Ambalabe village requires 5 hours walk and this village is accessible by two choice: one is by cross motorbike following the RIP n˚8 (Route d'Intérêt Provinciale n˚8) and the second one by motor boat following Sakanila River face to lots of rapid from Tsarasambo and it requires a minimum of 8 hours.

GOAL

To conserve the Vohibe Forest in its current near pristine condition with the full involvement of local communities.

VEGETATION

Low and mid elevation evergreen humid forest.

BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE

1- Eleven species of lemur including Varecia variegata, Propithecus diadema and Indri indri.
2- Diverse avifauna and herpatofauna.
3- More than 800 species of higher plant inventoried and rich of orchid species (ca 200 species).
4- A rare example of pristine, low elevation evergreen forest.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE

Forest used as sources of timber, medicinal plant. Some potential for adventure tourism.

THREATS

1- Shifting cultivation.
2- Illegal exploitation of timber.
3- Artisanal gold mining.
